Very useful for residents that work with scrubs. Obviously not so useful when u have to also wear lab coat.

This hip clip is great! Now my stethoscope is at my side instead of in the way around my neck. I bought one for my friends I work with and they love it too!

As a first year resident pocket space is preciously limited. There's the Sanford guide, The Washington Manual, Pharmacopea and about a ream of papers that you have to read, review, and know by heart. I literally didn't have enough pocket space for my stethescope and believe me, by the end of the day it can hang heavy on your neck.
The hip clip made so much sense and it's very convenient. It sometimes gets in the way if I carry my PDA, cellphone and beeper on the same side of my hip though.
