Heat Settings Not Marked September 20, 2008

There are no markings for the heat settings and I am not sure whether to spin the dial clockwise or counter clockwise to increase/decrease the heat. Either way feels really hot to me and I don't want to leave my finger on the flat iron long enough to do a "feel the heat" test. Advice appreciated.
